Living in Europe over 14 years I have come to understand how important impressions are. Americans are loud and opininated, maybe or maybe not. I came from New York, an educated professional women, yes opinionated. There are over 7 million Americans, like me living outside the safety of our US borders. In the small country I now live in with my family at least 4 languages are spoken. Cultural and religious differences are visible, not in the form of a neighborhood that speaks a language other than english but in the form an entire section of the country. This country is surrounded by many nations that in turn have their on ways, trust when I say I have learned to listen, to understand. An American abroad can be a lonely experience. That’s part of understanding, how do immigrants feel when they arrive in the US, maybe just as alone. How naked do you feel as an American trying to explain the housing market crash or Enron? My answer: “The USA is not the only country on the planet but “we put our money where our mouth is” for better or for worse Americans are always called in or asked to butt out”: I am like so many Americans living abroad, the face of America, a front line witness to the realities outside of US borders. I work tiredlessly helping english speaking people adjust to their “home away from home”. As a mother I work to instill in my children a love for a country they one day will call their second home. I choose to be the eyes and ears not filtered by the media, for Americans back home, and for other nations who want to know what an American thinks separate from the politics of the day, I hope to be an example of what it means to be American; free to think and exprees, strong enough to stand against injustice and willing to act for not against human rights. Oh yes baseball is cooler than soccer.
